Frequently asked questions

How is take-home pay calculated in Australia?

Take-home (net) pay is your gross income minus income tax, the 2% Medicare levy and any compulsory HELP/HECS repayment. Employer superannuation is paid on top of your salary and is not part of your take-home pay.

Does this calculator include superannuation?

Employer super is 12% of ordinary time earnings from 1 July 2025. It goes into your super fund, not your bank account, so it is shown separately. If your quoted package already includes super, tick "My pay includes super" and we will back it out for you.

What are the 2026–27 tax rates?

For residents, income up to $18,200 is tax-free, $18,201–$45,000 is taxed at 15%, $45,001–$135,000 at 30%, $135,001–$190,000 at 37% and over $190,000 at 45%. The 16% rate dropped to 15% on 1 July 2026. Switch the income year to 2025–26 to see last year’s figures.

Do I pay the Medicare levy?

Most Australian residents pay a 2% Medicare levy. Low-income earners pay less or nothing. Higher earners without private hospital cover may also pay the Medicare levy surcharge (1–1.5%), which you can estimate by unticking the private cover option.

How does a HELP/HECS debt change my pay?

HELP repayments use a marginal system: nothing below the minimum repayment income ($67,000 in 2025–26, $69,528 in 2026–27), then 15 cents per dollar, then 17 cents in a higher band, capped at 10% of your income. Tick the HELP option to see the repayment deducted.

Is this the same as my payslip?

It is a close annual estimate. Payslips use the ATO withholding schedules, which can differ slightly from your final tax bill, and your employer may deduct other items such as union fees or salary packaging.

Does my state or territory change my take-home pay?

No. Australia has no state income tax, so the figures are the same in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and everywhere else. Payroll tax is paid by employers, not you.

Is my data stored?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved.
